CATARACT CORRECTION

CATARACT SURGERY
What actually happens during cataract surgery?
During the outpatient cataract procedure, the surgeon removes the clouded lens and implants an artificial replacement lens—either a standard lens or a premium lens—in its place. The incision heals naturally and no stitches are necessary. The procedure is performed in as little as 15 minutes. After the procedure, you will be allowed to return home. Vision improves immediately following surgery, with complete recover in a few days.
What happens on the day of surgery?
On the day of surgery, you may be given medication to help you relax, and drops will be placed in your eye. A local anesthetic is used, and you will remain quite comfortable during the surgery. To prevent infection, the skin surrounding your eye will be cleaned, and strict precautions are observed to maintain a sterile environment.
How long will the procedure take?
The entire process is quick and may be finished in as little as 15 minutes. You will be taken to the recovery area, and after a short stay, you will be allowed to return home with your designated driver. You will NOT be allowed to drive yourself home.
When will my vision improve?
Most patients experience better vision within just a few days. More than 99% of patients who undergo cataract surgery rank their vision as significantly improved.
Does Medicare pay for advanced multifocal replacement lenses?
Medicare now permits Charleston cataract patients to select either a standard replacement lens implant or a premium replacement lens implant. This Medicare regulation allows patients to pay privately for the portion of the charges for the implantation of a premium replacement lens and related technical services that exceeds the benefit for a standard replacement lens.
