Francisco A. Folgar, M.D.

Francisco A. Folgar, M.D.

 

Dr. Folgar specializes in the treatment of medical and surgical diseases of the retina. His practice includes the treatment of retinal detachment, macular hole, macular pucker (epiretinal membrane), macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular occlusion. He also treats patients with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases known as uveitis, as well as pediatric retinal diseases.

Dr. Folgar is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

He completed his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Duke University Eye Center, one of the premier surgical training programs in the nation and the birthplace of modern vitreous surgery. In addition to patient care, he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship with world-renowned experts at Duke University, developing new applications for ophthalmic imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of macular diseases. He has authored many peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, and continues to be actively involved in research and clinical trials.

His work has been nationally recognized with research awards from the Retina Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has been invited to deliver lectures on ophthalmic imaging throughout the United States, Mexico, and Spain. He is a scientific peer reviewer for the journal Retina and previously served as an assistant section editor.

Dr. Folgar graduated from Duke University with bachelor degrees in Biology and Economics. He completed his medical degree and ophthalmology residency at New York University and the Manhattan Eye Ear & Throat Hospital. He returned to Duke University for his clinical and research fellowships, before settling in beautiful South Carolina.

Dr. Folgar is also fluent in Spanish and French. He currently sees patients in Mount Pleasant, Summerville, West Ashley, and Walterboro.
